Twitch Delays Community Guidelines Update
Twitch Delays Community Guidelines Update
We covered the new Twitch Community Guidelines update last week, which primarily takes aim at fixing the streaming service’s problems with harassment and overly-sexualized content.
Since announcing the update, Twitch has received a considerable amount of backlash for what much of the community sees as a potentially unfair crackdown on mature streamers and their audiences.
Yesterday Twitch acknowledged the concerns of its users and released a statement on Twitter.
Thanks for all your insightful feedback on our new Community Guidelines! It’s important they’re clear to everyone and we need to better explain some sections, so we’re pushing back enforcement to start March 5. We’ll release an updated FAQ before then.

The addition of an FAQ is a good way to communicate with their community, but it isn’t likely to fix the underlying problem that streamers and their communities are worried about.
There are still a number of questionable new rules established in the update that have the community deeply worried. For example, the new Twitch ‘dress code’ states that:
Attire in gaming streams, most at-home streams, and all profile/channel imagery should be appropriate for a public street, mall, or restaurant. As a reminder, we will not tolerate using this policy as a basis to harass streamers on or off Twitch, regardless of whether you think they’re breaking this rule.
While this may seem mundane on its surface, many streamers might find themselves accidentally caught out by this rule. Tyler1, for example, wore a shirtless costume for his return back to the platform. And while it was entirely appropriate for his stream, it likely wouldn’t be appropriate for a mall or restaurant.
The problem with the new Twitch community guidelines update isn’t just that its largely ambiguous, its also simply too stringent.
Twitch has officially delayed its community update until March 5. In the meantime, you can read the full update here.
We’ll update this post with the promised FAQ when Twitch releases it.
