Fast Travel Through the Week: September 8th Edition

by | Sep 8, 2017 | News, News Section, weekly

Every week, ‘Fast Travel’ takes the biggest news in gaming and crams it all into one place. It’s perfect for busy individuals and those who just can’t be bothered to keep up with the industry. And people who don’t like to read lots of words. And people who like lots of pictures/videos with fewer words. And people who like bullet points. And people who like video games. And people who hate rambling. And some dogs too. Probably not cats though, sorry.

This Weeks Headlines

Blizzard Opening New Esports Arena in Los Angeles

Blizzard is opening another esports arena, over 6,750 miles away from their first one. The creatively named ‘Blizzard Arena Los Angeles’ is scheduled to open just in time for the Overwatch Contenders’ first season playoffs starting on October 7th.

The arena is 50,000-square-feet and taking over the Burbank studios that used to house “The Tonight Show.” The venue was originally split into a few different sound stages and Blizzard plans on using all that space for things like a merchandise store and practices areas.

PUBG Hits Another Milestone With 10 Million Copies Sold

PUBG has taken the gaming world by storm and it hasn’t even left Early Access yet. The game has now sold over 10 million copies, a major milestone for any game, let alone one that is only available on a single platform.

The game’s 10 million sales mark comes only a week after the game briefly knocked Dota 2 off its Steam pedestal. Dota 2 is perpetually the most concurrently played game on Steam, but PUBG recently and briefly stole the crown when it had a whopping 870,000 concurrent players two weekends ago. That number dipped and Dota 2 retook the top spot, but PUBG’s accolade was no fluke. According to Steam, in the last 48 hours, PUBG’s player count peaked at 962,950.

H2K Threatens to Leave LCS Over Riot Corruption

Just four days ago, H2K-Gaming released an open letter to fans and Riot alike. The letter stated that H2K may be forced to leave the EU LCS if Riot does not drastically change financial models or offer some form of subsidies and revenue sharing.

H2K, who currently sit in fourth place in the EU LCS, argued that not only could they not maintain a successful business model, but no team could in NA or EU.

Some Future Nintendo Switch Games Will Require Memory Cards

According to Nintendo, some future Switch games will require additional memory cards in order to be played. With the Switch’s meager 32 GB of on-board memory, this news was bound to come eventually.

The announcement came nestled into a statement about Nintendo’s new partnership with Western Digital, the company behind SanDisk. The two companies are working together to provide Nintendo branded microSDXC cards, which will be available in 64 GB and 128 GB variates.

IndieCade 2017: October 6-8 in Los Angeles

If you’re going to be in or around LA a month from now, you might want to check out IndieCade, the gaming festival made specifically for indie games.

It’s tons of fun for anyone who enjoys gaming, not just fans of indie games. You’ll get a chance to meet some great developers from all over the world, many of whom have left the AAA scene in order to pursue their own projects. It’s much more intimate and personable than most of the other gaming conferences out there and it’s located in Little Tokyo this year.

We’ll be on the ground covering IndieCade the whole weekend. If you’re going to be there, drop us a line, send us an email or comment and let us know, we’d love to meet up with some of you.

Gronk Taking It to the Browns

Mario Kart VR

The NFL season is officially underway and what better way to kick things off than with a good old fashioned Gronk throw down. This awesome gif comes to us courtesy of Reddit user u/TooShiftyForYou.

There’s a few reasons why this gif is so incredible. First of all, it shows just how great the physics are in the new Madden game. A couple years ago these two players would’ve just glitched through one another. Second,  it’s hilarious and reminds us of NFL Blitz. Third, the Patriots lost their home opener and that’s just icing on the cake.
