Ubisoft’s Tribute to a Fallen Player

by | Aug 24, 2017 | News, News Section, Videogames

Like so many games these days, Rainbow Six Siege relies heavily on community. Unlike a lot of gaming communities though, Siege’s is notoriously communal. It lacks a lot of the vitriol and toxicity that plagues many of its competitors.

For some reason, the Siege crowd tends to be more cordial and inclusive than others. Granted, it can still be highly tense and competitive, but there aren’t typically players yelling and belittling you every time you or someone else makes a mistake. Sure there are still the occasional trolls and general assholes, but they’re few and far between compared to games like League of Legends or Call of Duty.

Rainbow Six Siege has a tight-knit and highly unusual community. Perhaps that’s why so many were heartbroken when one of its 20 million players passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.

A player named ‘BostonBearJew,’ or Zach to the outside world, died on March 21, 2017. After Zach passed away, a friend of his reached out to a prominent Siege community developer named Craig Robinson. All he asked for was a way for Zach to be remembered.

That was just over five months ago now and no one was quite sure if anything would come of the request, but now we know that Robinson and the developers at Ubisoft came through.

Ubisoft recently unveiled new details on their imminent update, ‘Operation Blood Orchid.’ In the update, there’s one map in particular that has caught the eye of the Siege community. It takes place in a forgotten theme park with an abandoned arcade towards its center. It’s the vacant arcade area where a heart wrenching tribute to Zach can be found.

You see, Zach wasn’t just a casual player, he was dedicated. He regularly participated in tournaments and could always be found in the Diamond rankings. Zach was among the better players in the Siege community and Ubisoft knew it.

Inside the arcade area of the abandoned theme park, on one specific machine, you can find the player stats for ‘BostonBearJew’ along with the phrase “Never Stop Playing.”

For all the mistakes Ubisoft has made in the past, it’s nice to know that they have people working there that truly care about players. Random people make requests and say things online constantly, but for the team behind Siege to go out of their way to honor one of their fallen community members is something special.
