Square Enix and Ubisoft Both Announce New Studios

It’s studio making season. Both Ubisoft and Square Enix announced the creation of new studios this month and for Ubisoft, it was a double-feature. The company, who just recently bought back its independence, announced two new international studios.

First up is Ubisoft Mumbai, an India-based based studio and the company’s second in the country. Mumbai joins the Pune studio and will be working on AAA games. The other new studio is Ubisoft Odesa, a Ukrainian studio that’s also set to focus on AAA game development. Odesa will be the company’s second Ukrainian hub, joining the long-running Ubisoft Kiev, who focuses heavily on porting games.

According to Jean-Philippe Pieuchot, managing director for Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, the goal of the company’s Indian studios is to “contribute towards the development of the Indian video game ecosystem by partnering closely with top schools and institutions.”

The new Ubisoft studios join a long list of over three dozen studios the company has around the world. As one of the biggest publishers of AAA games, it’s no surprise to see them expanding.

Square Enix only has one new studio to talk about, but it’s likely to be the scene-stealer. Luminous Productions will be a Tokyo-based studio with the former director of Final Fantasy XV, Hajime Tabat, at the helm. Tabata is bringing along at least of few of his companions from his Final Fantasy XV along for the ride.

There’s no word yet on what the Tokyo studio will be working on specifically, but it likely won’t be a new Final Fantasy title. Tabata has said in the past that he wants to work on something completely new next and Square Enix has stated that Luminous will be working on new AAA titles that are innovative and entertaining for a global audience.

Square Enix routinely puts out incredible work and it’s good to hear that they’re expanding, especially because that just gives us one more game to look forward to.
