THQ Nordic Is Bringing Back Some Classic Nickelodeon Games

by | Mar 21, 2018 | News, News Section, Videogames

SpongeBob, Ang, Timmy Turner, Danny Phantom, Zim, Rocko and more are making a comeback thanks to THQ Nordic. The company announced recently that they were bringing back 16 Nickelodeon series that were previously published under the old THQ brand.

They haven’t yet said exactly which games they would be re-releasing, choosing to instead reveal the series themselves. It seems unlikely that all of the old SpongeBob games would be re-released, there were more than a two dozen after all, but we know for sure that at least one or more will be.

“It is a perfect fit for our ‘asset care’ strategy: bringing back fan-favorites, continuing to support legacy games and make them available on current and even next-gen platforms.”

— Adrienne Lauer, VP of Digital Sales

Joining the Bikini Bottom crew will be the likes of Invader Zim, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats, Rocket Power and more. THQ Nordic has chosen a pretty wide variety of shows spanning over 20 years of animation. There aren’t many notable omissions on the list, but there are a couple interesting inclusions. The relatively new Back at the Barnyard seems the oddest fit in the bunch, but perhaps THQ is stretching for the broadest possible audience.

The Nickelodeon announcement is part of the company’s ‘asset care’ program, which attempts to revitalize the vast library of old games and franchises that Nordic acquired when they scooped up the THQ brand.

According to the company’s press release, this might be more than a one-time thing with Nickelodeon. THQ Nordic has seemingly inked a whole new partnership with the network. Jon Roman, Senior Vice President at Nickelodeon, said that “The appetite for Nickelodeon content old and new continues to grow and it’s exciting to bring our beloved content to new audiences through this partnership with THQ Nordic. […] These titles were popular when they were first released and we can’t wait for fans around the world to rediscover their favorites.”

Classic Nickelodeon Games from THQ

This move from THQ Nordic is only one in a long series of attempts the company has made to grow its importance in the past year or so. From acquiring THQ in the first place to pushing out a strong line-up of games in 2018, the budding company is doing everything it can to become a major player in the domestic and international gaming industry.
