Almost two weeks ago, an argument that started over bets placed on a Call of Duty: WWII match ended with one man arrested for swatting and another dead. The argument ended in one man, Tyler Barriss, making a false call to 911 on another player. However, the address Barriss had was for an unrelated man’s home, which ended in his accidental death by swat officers. Now, Tyler Barriss is being charged with the involuntary manslaughter of Andrew Finch.

While it has fallen out of popularity, swatting has been a dangerous part of gaming culture for many years. Swatting is when a false hostage situation is reported to the police with the goal of having the swat team deployed to invade and arrest an unsuspecting victim. This has ended in tragedy before and has also led to tougher laws on the act, such as an 11 year prison sentence given to one man. Since 2014, it has declined significantly, but incidents such as this still do occur from time to time.

For Barriss, the charge of involuntary manslaughter isn’t up there with murder, but the felony sentence could range anywhere from two to ten years in prison. Factors like criminal records and past action all factor into the ruling. Since Barriss has a reputation in the community for swatting, it is likely he will be punished much more severely. This is in addition to if Barriss will be found guilty of the additional charges of Interference with law enforcement and giving a false alarm.

According to The Globe and Mail, Barriss is also now being charged with a Canada swatting incident.
