Swatting Victim Killed Over Call of Duty Argument

An argument over a Call of Duty: WWII match has ended in the death of one player and the arrest of another. Tyler Barriss, 25, of Los Angeles was arrested Saturday morning in the suspected swatting and resulting death of Andrew Finch, 28, of Wichita, Kansas.

Although reports are a little unclear, the Call of Duty: WWII community has pointed to an online argument over a Search and Destroy match as the origin point. Two players, Miruhcle and Baperizer, messaged each other about a wager made on the results of the match. The discussion quickly escalated across social messaging services when Baperizer reached out to a well-known swatter in the community, SWAuTistic (Tyler Barriss), for help. Miruhcle then taunted the two, providing the address of Finch, who authorities believe was an unrelated victim to the attack. Tyler Barriss has since been arrested and charged in the incident.

As with most swats, an anonymous call was made claiming a man was holding hostages at the address and was armed. When the swat team arrived and ordered Finch to raise his hands above his head, he moved his hands to his waist, causing the police to open fire and kill him. He was unarmed.

Swatting was first used as a term in 2008, following an increase in online threats and acts. Since then, a number of individuals have been swatted with the act becoming increasingly popular to do to streamers, such as a streamer and Youtuber Kootra, who was swatted live on his stream. Swatting has died down significantly since a number of high profile cases ended in severe punishments, such as an 11 year sentence in federal prison for one swatter. Still, there are incidents every year of gamers being targeted by swatting, with gamers with high profile accounts or personalities being the biggest targets.
