Is Tyler1 Just a Fad?

by | Jan 16, 2018 | Livestreaming, News, News Section, Videogames

Tyler1 made his triumphant return to streaming just one week ago. As the biggest troll in the history of League of Legends, and perhaps the most famous on in the history of gaming, there was a lot of drama and controversy around his comeback. His first day broke not just records for League of Legends streaming, but for all streaming by a single person, beating even Faker, the best League of Legends player in the world. So the real question is: Can Tyler1 keep his fans watching?

Although Tyler1’s start was astronomically high, everyone knew it would drop. Once his fame faded, the real fans would stay, and the others would fall away. However, after one week, and somewhere around 300k viewers falling off, Tyler1 is still staying strong with peaks as high as 70k. To give some perspective, imaqtpie, one of the biggest League of Legends streamers on Twitch, averages 20k viewers, putting Tyler1 well and ahead of his competition.

Despite what many expected, Tyler1 did not troll his way through his streams, but that doesn’t mean remnants of his old ways don’t remain. Part of what made Tyler1 so appealing was his hyper-aggression both in and out of game. Tyler1 is a streamer that seems fearless of what others think of him as well as the repercussions of his actions, which is why he trolled in the first place. It’s his alpha-male branding and playstyle that appeal to his fans.

For instance, when one of the people in his chat told him to ‘play safe’ in order to win his match, this was how he responded.

“Play it safe? Ban this idiot… That’s what’s wrong with this community… stupid bitch.”

What Tyler1 brings is a trash-talking vibe to gaming, and it works because he is actually really good. To give some idea, when Tyler1 started streaming just one week ago, he was starting a new account and playing promos. Since then, he has climbed through Silver, Gold, and Platinum to sit at Diamond III. Beyond Diamond is Masters, and beyond that, Challenger. In one week, Tyler1 has climbed higher up the ladder than not just most normal people, but also most streamers.

It’s likely that his numbers will dip again as the weeks and months roll on, but he has a niche as the only hyper-aggressive streamer on the market who is also remarkably good at the game. And while some streamers are intimidated by toxicity in their chat, Tyler1 just hits right back. After all, you can’t out-toxic the king of toxicity.
