THQ Nordic Acquires Saints Row Publisher Koch Media
Saints Row is home once again.
In case you forgot, THQ was the original publisher of the Saints Row series. Then the company went bankrupt and their assets were auctioned off. Nordic Games eventually acquired the old company’s branding and THQ Nordic was born, but still many of the old THQ titles belonged to other companies.
The Saints Row series landed with a European entertainment company called Koch Media. This morning, THQ Nordic announced that they’d acquired Koch Media for just under $150 million.
Koch Media is more than just Saints Row, though. Between them and their subsidiaries, including the Deep Silver label, THQ Nordic now owns the Dead Island, Metro and Homefront franchises as well, among others.
The deal is just one of many recently pulled off by the Austrian publisher. The company has worked hard in the last couple years to bolster its resume of games and subsidiaries. At the end of last year, the company acquired Experiment 101 and their new IP, Biomutant. That, plus Darksiders 3 and a couple other hotly anticipated titles have THQ Nordic set up for a strong 2018 campaign.
Adding Koch Media to their roster, THQ Nordic now has over 100 IPs, over 1,600 employees and 36 studios. The company has sprung to life seemingly out of nowhere over the past year and it looks like there’s nothing stopping them.
At a time when publishers are putting out countless remakes and sequels, THQ Nordic has over 30 unannounced games and several brand new titles on the way. Not to mention, while companies like EA struggle mightily with public perception issues, there’s really no reason for gamers to dislike THQ Nordic at the moment.
It’s a perfect time for a new-ish publisher to break out onto the scene and become a force to be reckoned with, and THQ Nordic seems primed to be that force.
