Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 90 million copies. 90 Million! If your jaw isn’t on the floor right now, let me put that number into perspective for you.

In the history of video games, only two games have ever sold more copies than Take-Two’s GTA V. The first is Tetris with 170 million copies, the second is Minecraft with just south of 145 million copies. Tetris is the penultimate classic, so its spot at the top makes sense. Minecraft‘s success is a little more confounding, but a low price point, endless bundles and unexpected popularity help to bring sense to that number.  

Then at third on the list of best-selling games of all time, we have Grand Theft Auto V. It’s a full-priced game with plenty of story and an abundance of online opportunities. In the history of video games, there’s really nothing to compare it to, and it’s sales numbers reflect that. 

The fact that GTA V has sold 90 million copies is impressive by itself, but what’s more impressive is that it sold over 15 million copies in 2017 alone, its fourth year in existence. Those 15 million copies made GTA V the third most popular game of 2017 in terms of copies sold. In other words, GTA V sold three times as many copies as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is widely considered to be the best game of 2017 and one of the best games of the decade. 

The game’s success is unprecedented. Since 2013, Grand Theft Auto has never left the best-sellers list. It already has a longer lifespan than the Wii U.  

With Red Dead Redemption 2 coming out in October, it’s safe to say that 2018 is stacking up to be another stellar year for Take-Two and Rockstar. The biggest question is, will RDR2 be able to sell more copies than a GTA V in its fifth year in existence?
