The co-creator of Counter-Strike, Jess Cliffe, has been charged with paying a 16-year-old girl for sex. The story first broke last week when it was reported that Cliffe was arrested for sexual exploitation of a child.

Cliffe’s crimes were uncovered during an investigation by the King County Sheriffs Office that first started in May of last year.  

According to Ars Technica, during the hearing Cliffe’s attorney, Zachary Wagnild, claimed that Cliffe was unaware of the girls age at the time of their encounters. Her age is incredibly significant to the case as sex crimes involving a minor carry a much harsher penalty than sex crimes involving only adults.

The 16-year-old victim, who has only been identified as AC, alleges that Cliffe filmed their final sexual encounter without her consent. She also has said that she was unaware of whether or not Cliffe knew her age during the encounters. 

According to Wagnild, Cliffe met AC on an adult website and was not looking for underage girls.

Cliffe has worked at Valve since 2003 and the company was quick to act on the news that he’d been arrested. They suspended him indefinitely last week, shortly after the news first broke, but have yet to comment on his status since the charges were officially filed.

 Jess Cliffe is currently free on a $150,000 bail. His next hearing is scheduled for February 25.
