Dota 2 Update Adds Tons of Player Experience Improvements

Announced as their Spring Cleaning update, Dota 2’s most recent changes aren’t just bug fixes and balances. The Valve team has taken a few hints from some League of Legends creature comforts as well as made the interface far more intuitive. The goal, it seems, is to make the often daunting MOBA a little easier to wrap your head around.

dota 2 interface changes

The vast majority of the Spring Cleaning changes were cosmetic and User Interface related, and while these don’t fundamentally change the game, they can make it vastly easier to play. One of the simplest changes – and one any constantly updating game should embrace – is the Recent Gameplay Changes icon. This shows players which heroes have had an update in the form of a floating icon, and if hovered, will reveal what changes have taken place. Since most developers are fairly bad about making this information obvious, this is hugely helpful to the players that don’t frequent forums.

Among the piles of changes coming to Dota 2 to improve quality of life are minimap icons showing the difficult of jungle camps, team teleport status bars, a redesigned player profile, visual tower damage (this is similar to how LoL’s towers decay while taking damage), and something like 100 other changes to the game. The full notes are available at the link here, but luckily for players, the vast majority of changes will be indicated in game via visual clues, so maybe the best thing about the changes is how easy it now is to notice them.

dota 2 ban

Dota 2 has also added in some changes to matchmaking. Players that receive constant negative reports can expect bans of up to 6 months, with penalties steadily increasing from 10 minutes. This is in addition to Valve’s VAC ban system, which is the most advanced ID banning program in the world. Custom match dodges can now also include a penalty mode which delivers similar bans.

Not all the matchmaking was negative, however. Valve has also put custom games on dedicated servers, which should help the user experience considerably in this arena, as well as revamped custom game arcade to make it easier to navigate games. Language-based matchmaking is also a much higher priority in determining opponents and teammates, something the game desperately needs.

While these changes aren’t as massive an update as Lol’s recent rune page update, it represents a the largest amount of bug fixes, user interface additions, and user experience changes, which all go a long way towards making the MOBA more approachable.
