Monster Hunter World Breaks 5 Million Sold in Opening Weekend

There are good sales numbers for games, there are great sales numbers for games, and then there is what Monster Hunter World did its opening weekend. In just three days following the release of Monster Hunter World on January 26, the game has already sold 5 million units across the PS4, and Xbox One, making it far and away the most successful game of the series.

Monster Hunter World 5 million

To give some idea of the success of Monster Hunter World, Square Enix was ecstatic to see Final Fantasy XV reach 6.5 million global sales a year after its release. Horizon Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million in its first two weeks, and Resident Evil 7 sold 3.5 million in a week. The most successful game of the Monster Hunter series before World, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, sold 4.9 million over the course of its entire lifetime. The opening weekend also brings the total sales for the entire series to 45 million, making just the first few days of Monster Hunter World equal to about 12% of sales for a series that is almost 14 years old.

Monster Hunter World’s success can be attributed to many things, but distribution is chief among them. It has been 14 years since America has seen a Monster Hunter title come to PlayStation, and the most recent title to grace consoles globally was Monster Hunter Tri, which was released for the Wii in 2010. Monster Hunter Tri was also released eight months earlier to Japan than the rest of the world, significantly slowing the momentum of the title, as well as released to the Wii exclusively. Many fans felt hurt the franchise, as the console was not well optimized for the Monster Hunter experience.

Conversely, Monster Hunter World has had a global release, meaning every region received it at the same time. Unlike previous installments, Capcom also wisely catered towards systems capable of making it a true next-generation game. That means that for now, the Switch was left out of the Monster Hunter party that PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC have all enjoyed.

Capcom is definitely celebrating, but we still have a long way to go to see how much more success Monster Hunter World will reel in. This is especially true considering the fact that Capcom has said they will release continuous DLC for the game in the form of new hunts and monsters, all of which will be free.

The first DLC, the Deviljho, is expected release this Spring, though an exact release has not yet been given.
