EA announces Progression Changes to Star Wars Battlefront II

In the never-ending saga that is Star Wars Battlefront II, EA has made some announcements regarding changes to the game. In typical EA fashion though, what they have mostly announced is that they are gearing up to make some announcements in March, but it proves that EA hasn’t given up on the game that tanked their stock and got them a scolding by Disney.

The tone of EA’s blog post could best be described as tentative. Star Wars has had a rough few months despite The Last Jedi’s pretty stellar earnings, and the last thing EA wants to do is piss off a fanbase that already seems to be frothing mad. To EA’s credit, in the past few months they have made strives to improve the game, including increasing drop rates for certain zones and increasing payouts from chests. The Crait maps incorporation into Blast Mode was also a nice touch considering it is probably the best map of the entire game.

As far as actual content goes, the only thing EA has announced is a new Jetpack Cargo mode coming in February, which will be small-scale skirmishes of eight players per team all equipped with jet packs and battling for, presumably, cargo.

Everything else EA has said is merely teasers of what is to come, and we use teasers lightly. The details of the new Season stated only that there would be one, and the commentary on the new progression system was as timid and uninformative as a statement gets.

“We are preparing significant changes to progression that will address many of the things we’ve seen players asking for.”

It seems pretty unlikely that the progression changes will actually be what fans have been asking for despite what EA says. After all, when EA took out in-game purchases it wasn’t because fans had won, it was because they would return “in some form,” probably one that was a less obvious rip-off.

As for Battlefront II, it is a game essentially designed to be broken. Some of the characters are all but worthless compared to others, and many of the unlockable characters simply have stronger, better, more versatile abilities than their counterparts. It was never a game designed for balance. Still, it’s possible that EA will make it as good as they can in the aftermath of what has happened, but we are still counting on them trying to find some tricky way of earning extra cash off it, and it’s likely it won’t have much to do with what players have been asking for.
