God of War gets a trailer and an April 20 Release Date

We are happy to finally get a release date out of the new God of War, but we are even happier to get a trailer that shows the new direction the series is going in. Kratos still seems like an action movie badass, but these days he looks far more like a Liam Neeson than an Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Borrowing some cues from Max Payne 3, including the bald and bearded look, Kratos returns to gaming with a much more serious tone, mostly by doing away with much of the tough guy bravado that was so commercially successful in the early 2000s. The original God of War, and most of its sequels, were little more than button mashing hack fests with the occasional pushing of pots onto buttons and orgy mini-games (no joke). But while the new God of War is certainly a product of the times – somber/series stories and Norse settings are all the rage – that doesn’t mean God of War will be a pretender.

The inclusion of Kratos’ son and a story that tries to answer questions of what it means to be a God and a God slayer are ones worth answering, and it makes this the first God of War title that might actually feel like it was written for adults. The fact that the world seems far more alive, and we mean that literally, Kratos might actually leave some of them breathing this time around, helps considerably. Maybe thirteen years after the fact, the devs are finally ready to gear a game towards a grown-up market, which is exactly what they seem to be doing with the piles of swag coming with the April release.

God of War Collector's Edition

There will be plenty of options besides the retail price of the game.

A pre-order of any edition will get three legendary skin shields and a pre-order from select locations will net a Talisman boosting XP and gold.

A $69.99 deluxe addition will include digital art book, comic book, pin, and comics book.

A $129.99 collector’s edition will include a 9’’ statue of Kratos and his son Atreus, a cloth map, as well as all the Deluxe content and the Death’s Vow armor set.

A $149.99 Stone Mason edition will include the full collector’s edition as well as four physical items taken directly from the game.

Whatever you buying options, God of War’s release date is April 20, where it will be available exclusively on the PS4.
