Popular League of Legends Streamers Hit By Hack

A few days ago, several of the biggest names in League of Legends streaming were hit by an apparent hack. While the streamers’ primary accounts remained untouched, a vulnerability was found in the form of their moderators, who had their accounts stolen to post derogatory and offensive language on the streamers’ main pages.

Professional League of Legends player Doublelift was among those hacked.

Among those known to be hit by the attack were major LoL streamers Tyler1, Doublelift, and IWillDominate. Few details have been listed, but Polygon captured a few screenshots of the incident which are definitely outside of Twitch’s policies on profanity.

Fortunately for the streamers, the only things compromised were moderator accounts and none of their personal accounts. Moderator accounts have control over things like banning users and changes to the Twitch chat, but the function the hackers targeted was the ability to change the title of the stream, something which can be seen at the bottom of Twitch videos and when users search for streamers or games.

Because the offensive language and changes all came from moderator accounts, it was these accounts and not the streamer’s accounts which were targeted and banned. As of now, all of the moderators have appealed the bans and are working to make their systems more secure. Apparently, the cause of the hacks came from the fact that not all moderators were using two-factor authentication for their logins. Now that that issue has been resolved, moderators of the channels are fairly certain it will not happen again. One of the hacked moderators quickly took to Reddit to explain:

“Same with [Doubelift], I was hacked. This is all getting settled right now… Tyler won’t get banned for this.”

For Tyler1 especially, this was a tense moment. The now reformed troll spent almost two years banned from League of Legends and has also been banned from Twitch in the past. However, the other two targets were both fairly large names in the League of Legends scene. IWillDominate, commonly called Dom, has been featured on several other streamers channels and has appeared with the Riot analyst Markz on Streamer Showdown. Doublelift has an even closer relationship to Riot as the most popular ADC in the entire NA LCS and arguably the best (especially after the first week of games).
