Tencent Signs Deals With Ubisoft and Lego

Tencent is the gaming behemoth you may have never heard of, but you’ll probably recognize a few of their subsidiaries — Riot Games, Supercell, Epic Games and Miniclip to name a few. Now the Chinese company has further expanded their growing reach by signing deals with both Ubisoft and Lego.

The Ubisoft-Tencent deal revolves around Ubisoft’s French mobile gaming subsidiary, Ketchapp, and Tencent’s Chinese app, Weixin. The app, which has nearly a billion monthly users, recently debuted a companion app called Weixin Mini-Game. Thanks to this new deal, Ketchapp games will now be a big part of Weixin Mini-Game, allowing Ubisoft to further tap into the biggest mobile market in the world.

In a joint press release, the heads of both Ubisoft and Tencent praised the deal as mutually beneficial and exciting for the mobile gamers of China.

Tencent Signs Deals With Ubisoft and Lego

It’s been a busy day for Tencent and Ubisoft was only half of the equation. The other half comes courtesy of Lego.

Lego has a big presence in the Chinese market and although the companies overall sales have been rather stagnant, they’re flourishing in China. The goal of Tencent and Lego’s partnership is to create a series of Lego-based games that will apparently be geared towards children. In a statement on Lego’s website, the Vice President of Tencent, Thirty Sun, said that “A positive and healthy online experience for children is very important with more and more children connecting digitally. Tencent is accountable for protecting the online experience of every child, and we incorporate online child protection in all aspects of our business practices.”

The General Manager of LEGO China, Jacob Kragh, further emphasized this point, saying “We are very pleased to form the partnership with Tencent. We’ve seen more and more Chinese children engage with the world digitally, and the partnership will bring them safe and imaginative digital LEGO content that also supports their needs of learning, development and entertainment.”

Both of these partnerships underline the fact that Tencent is growing more and more powerful in the gaming world. While much of their influence is concentrated on China, there’s no avoiding the fact that their tendrils are beginning to weave their way into other markets as well.
