It’s been fifteen years since the incredibly popular and incredibly weird Disgaea: Hour of Darkness came out on the PS2. In that time, the Disgaea series has enjoyed eleven sequels and spin-off titles as well as an anime series. It also helped to establish Nippon Ichi’s reputation and style as a developer for years to come. Now, in honor of its anniversary, Nippon Ichi is working on an HD remake.

Disgaea is a difficult series to explain. There aren’t many titles that feature a war between heaven and hell as well as parodies of the Power Rangers and riffs on space-adventure heroes and their bimbo sidekicks as well as tossing in the ultimate zombie, crafted with the body parts of the world’s greatest heroes and topped off with a horse’s wiener. But that was always the charm of Disgaea. From the game’s sometimes childish humor to its over the top style, it was reminiscent of older RPGs that weren’t afraid to be stupid. The iconic Super Mario RPG was also incredibly silly and also happened to feature a parody of the Power Rangers, and Disgaea has always seemed to embrace this.

As far as gameplay goes, Disgaea’s tactical system wasn’t up to the snuff of titles like Final Fantasy Tactics, but – like its atmosphere – it had a charm all its own. There was something uniquely satisfying about hurling enemies into one another to make a super baddie to farm for experience. Its biggest weakness was probably that it was focused too heavily on combat. With the ability to have party members transmigrate – where they reverted to level 1 but at a much more powerful state – Disgaea was always a bit too farmy.

That aside, a Disgaea HD remake could greatly enhance the original experience. A redressing of the farm-heavy aspects of the game with a little more dialogue or a little more fun could go a long way.

While the Disgaea: Hour of Darkness HD remake does not yet have a release date, we can expect it in the Summer of 2018. Before then, it would be nice to have NIS throw us a few screenshots or trailers.
