Rocket League’s Cross-Platform Support Could Be Huge for Esports

The number of big esports that currently have cross-platform support is roughly zero – not a single one. The primary reason for that is that the current esport ecosystem is dominated entirely by PC gaming. From CS:GO to League of Legends, every major esport is on the PC. But Psyonix, the team behind Rocket League, announced in a recent tweet that they are working on cross-platform play, something which could translate into the esports scene and would make it the only game of its kind with an esport that allowed for players to choose their platform of choice.

Rocket League cross-platform

Rocket League has been steadily climbing the ladder of popularity for some time. With a combination of simple game mechanics and easy to understand rules, the game has been winning players as well as fans. Also, because the game is fundamentally simple but technically difficult, it can easily be ported to any platform, as with its recent release for the Switch. By sheer scope, this gives Rocket League a clear advantage over its competition in the esport scene.

While League of Legends and Dota 2 fight for potentially the same fan base, Rocket League can target the console gaming market, which is a market of roughly 89 million. Console esports and gaming have been largely ignored by the larger esports world, especially in the case of series like Call of Duty, but that doesn’t mean money and success aren’t in those arenas. In fact, former pro Call of Duty player Nadeshot, is the owner of one of the NA LCS’s newest teams, 100 Thieves.

The fact is, while the PS4 in particular has been reluctant to allow cross-platform support, it is most likely coming in the very near future. If the big three – Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox – can accept that their competition isn’t going anywhere, it would probably benefit them all to allow their players to compete, which is exactly what Psyonix is banking on.

Even if Rocket League never does get competitive cross-platform play though, lettings it player base enjoy it will help immensely, and it could be what the already rising star needs to break into the top rungs of esports.
