Final Fantasy XV passes 6.5 million units sold

This may be the biggest news for Final Fantasy and Square Enix in a very long time. The latest installment in the Final Fantasy series has broken 6.5 million in units sold without even entering into the PC market, and according to director Hajime Tabata, that’s just the beginning.

FFXV portable edition

Few games have measured up to what Final Fantasy XV has become. We know that director Hajime Tabata put a lot of effort into this game – even going so far as to call it the “last chance” the series might get – but it must have exceeded even his expectations. Many gamers first view of FFXV came from Conan O’Brien’s frustrated mocking of the game when he played it late last year, but once reviewers got their hands on the game, they all uniformly agreed that it was a rather good, if not approaching a great game, despite the boy-band silliness that it gave off.

This is only compounded by the fact that it can seemingly do no wrong. On the coattails of an amazing launch, Final Fantasy XV unveiled at this year’s Gamescom an Assassin’s Creed partnership that has extended from easter eggs and artwork to DLCs and skins.

Even though the game has yet to be ported to PC, Square Enix has also announced Final Fantasy XV’s online DLC, Comrades – which features a slew of online multiplayer options – as well as Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition for the phone – and even this, which many suspected would be a cheaply made cash grab – is actually shaping up to be rather well-made and endearing. Many thought the PC release of FFXV would probably put the game to rest, but Tabata had more to say at Gamescom than just Assassin’s Creed collaborations

“Everyone on Final Fantasy XV, they love this specific console that sounds a lot like “Twitch” – you may want to think something about that in the future.”

In what capacity FFXV will arrive for the Switch isn’t yet known – it could be the full release, the Pocket Edition, or some other variation – but if Square Enix has shown anything with this title, it’s that they are going to put their full force behind it, and they aren’t yet willing to call it quits. Fortunately for them, the game sales seem to agree.
