Dishonored: Death of the Outsider Gets Stealthy

by | Sep 15, 2017 | News, News Section, Videogames

For fans of the series (and anyone that can read the title), it’s pretty obvious that this game is about killing the Outsider, the supernatural being that seems to pull the strings from the shadows of the first two games. This is an exciting development for a lot of reasons, but mostly because we are hoping Death of the Outsider is building up to either a new Dishonored with a fresh start – or a new title from Arkane. Either way, it feels like they are using this smaller title as a testing ground.

Dishonored’s newest installment, Death of the Outsider, is out today in the form of Billie Lurk. But as good as our new protagonist is as at exploding, stabbing, and eviscerating her enemies, there were also some nice improvements to stealth. What sealed the deal was the removal of the chaos system, which meant if we had an urge to murder in the middle of all that stealthing, we could do it without fear of being penalized.

There were a few other changes that Arkane brought to Billy as well. They did away with the chaos system (a moral system that determined the ending), the elixirs to recharge powers (your powers now recharge on their own), and gave Billy three of her own unique abilities which she gets access to all at the same time. Billy’s Displace is in many ways a superior evolution of Blink. It allows for teleportation to get into and out of tight spots, but it also allows more freedom and utility from the player. Displacing onto an enemy, for instance, will displace their insides all over the floor.

But what excited us most about Death of the Outsider were the improvements to the stealth and inclusions of abilities like Semblance. In a Game of Thrones-esque version of Faceless Men, Billie can steal the identities of her enemies to better stealth past them. This gives a plethora of options and fun, like being able to quickly chain attacks or kills by disabling and stealing faces in immediate succession or by tricking enemies into unlocking doors or even battling one another.

Though a shorter title, Billie brings an interesting new array of powers and freedom that fans of Dishonored will relish. The game delivers in stealth and in mayhem, and at about 8-10 hours of gameplay, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is a good standalone that wraps up many of the loose ends of the series.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is available today on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Steam.
