League of Legends Battles Toxic Community with Camp Yordle

League of Legends has just announced a new system to battle toxicity in Brazil. Camp Yordle will run from September 17 – September 19. It will randomly assign players into two groups and judge them collectively based off the negative reports of the individual members. If a team receives no complaints or only a few, every member receives a loot crate. This is a new turn for Riot which has tried several avenues in the past to encourage good behavior and discourage trolling, including honoring players and the Tribunal, but all of Riot’s previous attempts have met with fairly limited success.

The reason we are so excited about this is it looks at community and negativity in a different light. Everyone who plays the game enjoys loot crates, crystals, and all the swag they bring – and loot crates do seem to be the foreseeable future for all online games – so Riot incorporated that.

Instead of trying to punish bad behavior, they will simply reward good behavior with loot crates. Trying to have the community regulate itself didn’t work as too many players simply don’t care about their reputation. However, by adding a single element – each player is in control of the loot they receive – this changes the system from a scolding, to a head pat.

There is no guarantee that this, like any other method tried, will work, but Riot has been testing a lot of new systems recently. Challenges, quests, and teams have been popping up frequently in the game client, and this feels like one more experiment by Riot to gather information for a larger strategy.

We, at least, will be rooting for its success. It’s unlikely it will stop players from hurling insults, feeding, and generally being dicks, but even a reduction would be a huge step forward. And if Brazil sees improvement, we can expect this to be implemented across the board on League of Legends, maybe even – if it does well – seeing it pop up in other games.
