OWL Commissioner AMA 101 – Dodging Questions and Hiding Rulebooks

A few days ago, the Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer took to Reddit to do an AMA regarding the future of the league and how Blizzard plans to move forward – at least that was what he said. The truth was that answers were few and far between, and Nate spent more time dodging questions than answering them.

Blizzard took a page right out of the EA playbook following Nanzer’s AMA. The only real difference is that fans were already outraged at EA, so any pandering, supplicating answers were immediately called out for what they were, but Nanzer managed to get away with it. It’s probably because the stakes aren’t exactly high, but it’s frustrating to have an opportunity to learn more about the esport only to be so obviously given the run-around.

Of particular oddity, and we are getting used to odd behavior from the OWL, Nanzer was extremely cagey about answering anything regarding the rules for the game. As many Redditors pointed out, this isn’t exactly the norm. The rules for every major esport can be found readily online – just a quick Google search away – and many fans find it confusing and worrying that the OWL has so far not released the rules. Perhaps they will release them someday, but with the official start to the season just one month away, it is a worrying sign that Blizzard either hasn’t finalized their rules, or aren’t willing to share them. In response to an early question about what the rules are, Nanzer answered with the following.

Nanzer was willing to edit it only after the vast majority of comments called him out for dodging, but without the edit, Nanzer does an amazing job of not answering the question at all while trying to deflect it with fun, casual conversation. Later on, and throughout the entire thread, Nanzer made mention of the rulebook but ignored all comments asking for a copy of the rules or why it wasn’t being made available. When one user asked where the rulebook was (since he so obviously wasn’t providing it), Nanzer sarcastically replied, “I have it right here.”Nanzer also didn’t respond to huge questions, such as the ability to follow specific players like CS:GO, instead choosing to take softball questions on jerseys which allowed him to plug the store.

All in all, it was an extremely disappointing AMA that gave more questions than it answered. The biggest takeaway was that Blizzard wasn’t big on sharing, which made the whole AMA feel like a sham. Blizzard has done surprisingly little to make friendly with their new esport, and this adds to growing list of concerns about how they are prepping for the OWL. Maybe some actual answers next time might help the fans to understand what is actually going on.
