With the help of Tencent, the goliath investment company behind Riot games, two PUBG inspired games are heading to the mobile front. This isn’t new grounds for Tencent, who already have over a dozen titles in the mobile-hungry Asian market, but it is a stark departure for PUBG. Even more interesting is that PUBG Corporation, the developers behind the game, have nothing to do with the new titles.

While a mobile version of PUBG has been teased for some time, Tencent only recently announced that they will have two, not one, mobile games released in the world of PUBG. The original title is being known only as Battlefield and will be helmed by the small developers Lightspeed and Quantum Studios. The second title is being created by Timi Studio and is only being teased as ‘arcade like’ and featuring naval battles – a pretty huge divergent from the original title.

Although PUBG has had huge success and launched the birth of battle royale’s, it has yet to be seen if the studio behind the game can turn it into the success that Tencent is hoping for. Their battle with Epic Games, the team behind Fortnite, was embarrassing and ultimately fruitless as Bluehole made empty threats of lawsuits that never panned out. Fortnite: Battle Royale has also siphoned a huge portion of fans of the genre as a more experienced studio behind with a far cleaner development team, especially since PUBG has been notoriously glitchy.

For now, all PUBG has shown is that it can make a lot of money, which is probably what Tencent is banking on considering the fact that Bluehole has nothing to do with the development or creation of the two mobile games. It’s fairly likely these are cash grabs more than expansions of a genre, but the PUBG popularity wave may be popular enough to carry these two titles through as well.
