by | Jan 5, 2018 | News, News Section, Videogames

The Fast Travel weekly gaming recap is your resource for staying caught up on everything going on in the gaming industry. We start by highlighting a few of the week’s biggest news pieces. Then it’s on to a little dollop of indie news. Followed by a helping of “The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week.” And finally, we gather up all the week’s headlines and smash them into a TL;DR pie for you to enjoy.

This Weeks Headlines

Rocket League reached another milestone this week as the game officially surpassed the 40 million player mark.

The game has a massive following and last year was its most successful yet, but where does it stand in the greater esport community? How does it match up to the likes of League of Legends, Dota 2 and Overwatch?

The Steam Awards are what would happen if the community at Rotten Tomatoes – not the critics – were in charge of the Oscars. We aren’t sure exactly what that would look like – except maybe that Bright would win best picture – but we do know what it looks like with games. It’s a lot of silliness, some games that are questionable in their categories and maybe some winners that many people will disagree with. All that really matters is that the fans chose the games and the winners.

Among the biggest winners are The Witcher 3 and PUBG, they took home top honors in the categories of “Choices Matter” and “Mom’s Spaghetti.”

Several Years Ago, the company iLife Technologies filed suit that Nintendo had infringed on a patent they held for motion control technologies. The company, which created and patented the technology to monitor infants, claimed that Nintendo’s Wiimote controller used technology alarmingly similar to the ones they patented and asked for $144 million in damages. They won $10 million instead, but it sets a precedent that hasn’t seen much light in the gaming industry. Are we entering an era of lawsuit wars with consoles?

Nintendo had a killer 2017 and to top everything off, the company just revealed that the Switch is officially the fastest selling console of all time, in the United States at least. In it’s first 10 months, the Switch sold more than 4.8 million units stateside, beating the previous record by over 800,000.

Who hold the old record? Nitendo.

The Wii was one of the hottest consoles of all time and it didn’t have a slow start. In its first 10 months, it sold more than 4 million units in the US.

Indie Spotlight

Crowdfunding for games was up dramatically in 2017, as long as those games weren’t of the video variety. Tabletop games flourished on Kickstarter, making up the majority of the platforms reported 29 percent increase in overall game funding in 2017.

Kickstarter Head of Games Luke Crane originally broke the news via his Twitter account, saying that “Games on @Kickstarter in 2017: $172M pledged ($163M raised); 7033 launched projects (2997 successfully funded projects); 767K backers (726K backers to successful projects). Good job y’all. A huge year for the community.” Initially he failed to differentiate between tabletops and video games, though in a later tweet he cleared things up a bit.

Video game crowfunding on the the site was essentially flat for 2017 (it was down considerably in 2016 and up every year prior to that). Meanwhile, tabletops were almost solely responsible for the overall game funding increase on Kickstarter in 2017.

The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week

Horizon Zero Dawn in Pixel Graphics

Shown off by Reddit user bdog7171, Horizon Zero Dawn in pixel graphics is our new obsession. The game needs to be made by Yacht Club Games, the creators of Shovel Knight, but we’d also accept Studio MDHR, creators of Cuphead. A lively soundtrack would be nice and we can’t help but think of the Thunderjaw as a Yoshi hear. Maybe we find one of the Tunderjaw as a baby and befriend it.

We can dream, can’t we?
