Nintendo had a killer 2017 and to top everything off, the company just revealed that the Switch is officially the fastest selling console of all time, in the United States at least. In it’s first 10 months, the Switch sold more than 4.8 million units stateside, beating the previous record by over 800,000.

Who held the old record? Nintendo.

The Wii was one of the hottest consoles of all time and it didn’t have a slow start. In its first 10 months, it sold more than 4 million units in the US.   

The Switch’s success shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. Nintendo went all in on the device last year and started things off with one of the highest rated games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild. As if that wasn’t enough, they released Super Mario Odyssey just months later. And in between we got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Skyrim. Then to top it all off, Rocket League debuted on the Switch just in time for the holiday season. 

The only title missing from that line-up is a new Super Smash Bros. 

For Nintendo, 2017 was boom or bust. The Wii U was a colossal failure and people were beginning to wonder if the company should just give up on hardware and focus on software. Instead, Nintendo brought everything they had to the plate and knocked it out of the park.

And if you’re worried about the future of Nintendo, how they could possibly compete with 2017’s line up of games, you shouldn’t be. According to Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO, “Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”
