Every Online Game Should have a Year in Review Like League of Legends

League of Legends enters its ninth year in 2018, and while the game is still largely the same, it is always evolving. Part of this process is the system they implemented last year in the Year in review, a system devised not just to tell players interesting stats (or not so interesting) – like how many times they used a Q on a certain champ – but also gives insight into what they could have done better at and what they exceled at.

League of Legends Year in Review

The Year in Review covers an incredibly large array of variables, everything from which champions you win games with to which friends you win games with. Information regarding objectives, like average dragons per game or average turrets, is especially useful for seeing how you measure in control of the map. However, the most interesting data is certainly the outlier stats like which of your friends you win the most games with (Riot was kind enough not to include the friend you lose the most with). Though deceptively simple, this is a good indication of not only the people we tilt the least when playing with, but who we also have good synergy with.

But Riot also throws out a lot of info on what we can do better. At lower levels, certain champions dominate the game. For top lane, certain bruisers are nearly unstoppable for less experienced players. Sion, Illaoi, and Urgot are just a few champions where a little skill can go a long way, and for a Jax main, it may seem impossible to get around the sheer defensive power of these champs. But seeing a stark number that says how often you lose against them might tell you exactly what you already know – maybe it’s time to start looking up some strategies against that champ. Riot also gives suggestions on some new champions to play, some that may fit into the gaps in experience a player is missing.

What the Year in Review does best though is tell players that Riot is just as interested in your journey as you are. In a sea of Bungie and EA publishers, it can be nice to know that a company actually does care about its fan base, and if they want to keep being the number one esport in the world, it’s probably a good idea that they do everything they can to keep that community happy and strong.
