by | Oct 13, 2017 | News, News Section, weekly

Each week, Fast Travel helps you get caught up on everything going on in the gaming industry. We start by highlighting a few of the week’s biggest news pieces. Then it’s on to a dollop of indie news. Followed by a helping of “The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week” to help you along. And finally, we gather up all the week’s headlines and smash them into a TL;DR pie for you to enjoy.

This Weeks Headlines

Fortnite recently announced that they’d surpassed the 7 million player mark, through a combination of Fortnite and Fortnite: Battle Royale. That 7 million figure encompasses players on PS4, Xbox One and PC.and is yet another big blow to competitor PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

PUBG was the first of the two games to launch earlier this year, but since then Fortnite has made a habit out of beating them to the punch around every corner. The PUBG devs announced early on that they’d be bringing their game to the Xbox One, but its official release date is still a big question mark. Meanwhile, Battle Royale made its debut on both the Xbox One and PS4 two weeks ago, just a couple of months after the game itself first went live on Steam.

Of course, both games are still in Early Access and aren’t slated for full release until sometime next year, which makes their player numbers all the more impressive.

Developer Daybreak Games’ recently announced the H1Z1 Pro League, a competitive league for the popular H1Z1: King of the Kill. The league will consist of 15 teams battling it out over a period of 20 weeks. The season will culminate in a league championship sometime in late 2018, though exact dates have yet to be revealed.

This is a big step for a game that finds itself in the increasingly crowded battle royale market.  As PUBG and Fortnite continue with their spat, H1Z1 has decided to trudge forward and make the best out of what they have.

Oculus made a big splash at their Oculus Connect 4 event this week. The newly-announced Oculus Go and Project Santa Cruz were the stars of the show. While we saw a quick look at Project Santa Cruz last year, this was the first time Oculus Go was introduced to the masses.

The new headset is completely wireless and will act as a sort of compromise between Gear VR and the Oculus Rift. The device won’t have anywhere near the capabilities of the Rift, but it’s also a big step up from Gear VR.

If you’re looking for a true PC-level wireless VR experience, you’ll have to wait for Project Santa Cruz when it releases likely sometime in 2019. Project Santa Cruz is the codename given to the high-end wireless VR device that Oculus is creating. It’s expected to do everything the Rift can do and more, without the need for wires or a dedicated PC.

Elave, the most notorious troll in LoL, became infamous in Korean professional play for doing everything in his power to keep his rank low, so that he could continue to rack up wins on his favored champion, Master Yi. After two seasons and over 1000 games spent intentionally feeding or trolling low elo players, Elave has finally been permabanned.

Reddit user DudeCasual is largely responsible for bringing Elave to the attention of thousands of Summoners and for helping videos of Elave reach hundreds of thousands of views. He also broke the news that Elave had been first slapped with a two-week suspension, and then a permaban when he continued trolling.

Indie Spotlight

IndieCade was last weekend and we were roaming the floor talking to gamers, interviewing devs and playing some awesome games.

One of the highlights for us was Cat Sorter VR, a game about fixing dysfunctional cats and throwing them through hoops when you’re done with them. We also really loved Hypothetically Fun, an Apples To Apples-esque card game that dives deeper than many of it’s contemporary counterparts.

Then there was the other cat game we enjoyed, Starcats.  It was a simple enough game where up to four cats in spacesuits tried to escape a beautifully designed planet. The game’s biggest flaw, the fact that you could work against each other and essentially prolong the game indefinitely, was also one of the things that made it so fun. It isn’t perfect, but it also is’t a finished game. According to the team behind the game, Starcats won’t launch until the end of this year at the earliest.

The Coolest Thing of the Week (Esports Edition)

Many things had to go right for Fnatic to achieve the greatest comeback in Worlds’ history. It was a day of insane pressure, grueling fights, and undying spirit, and though Longzhu were the ones stepping away with a clean 6-0, Fnatic were the real stars of Group B. While their opponents fell apart under pressure, Fnatic held tight to their experience and discipline.

Fnatic started it off by simply letting Immortals dismantle themselves. CodySun was off the whole game, constantly out of position and at one point hurling himself into the middle of FNC and actually using Tristana’s ult to rocket an enemy into his team. Pobelter felt the pressure as well, whiffing numerous ults and attacks and ending up completely routed by FNC’s Caps.

Then it was on to GIGABYTE. FNC out-played the Vietnamese team at every turn. GAM drafted a nearly identical team to the one that defeated IMT, but FNC identified Archie’s Urgot as the primary threat and focused him hard in the early game, shutting him down and preventing him from ever becoming a threat. Without Ashe or a powerful Urgot, GAM simply had no proper engage and FNC cruised to another victory.
