Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima Stepping Down in June
Tatsumi Kimishima, Nintendo’s President since the death of Satoru Iwata in 2015, is stepping down to allow younger leadership to help propel Nintendo into the future. Kimishima, who just turned 68 last week, lead Nintendo out of a tumultuous time with the Wii U and into the new era of the Switch.
Replacing the much beloved Iwata was no small task, but Kimishima excelled during his time at the helm.
Taking over for him will be Shuntaro Furukawa, who’s been with Nintendo for over two decades. The transition, which was announced along with the company’s latest financial earnings report, has to be voted on and approved at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders before it can become official. The shareholders meeting is scheduled for June 28 and Furukawa should be able to take over as soon as the move is approved.
Furukawa is the current head of Nintendo’s global marketing department and acts as an outside director for The Pokémon Company. At 46 years old, he’s much younger than Kimishima, but four years older than Iwata was when he first took over.
This transition comes at a time when things are going overwhelmingly well for Nintendo as a whole. The company doubled its revenue over the past year and the Switch’s sales figures are beating expectations.
Since launch, nearly 18 million units have been sold, with just over 15 million being sold in the 2017 fiscal year, which ran from April 2017 to March 2018. Nintendo is also projecting those number to rise and have predicted they’ll sell 20 million Switch units in the 2018 fiscal year.
Hardware is only a part of Nintendo’s recent success. They produced two of the top games of 2017 in Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and have a full slate of tremendous titles on the docket for 2018, including the next instalment in the ever popular Super Smash Bros. series.
A lot will be expected of Furukawa when he takes over. One of the things that Nintendo has been routinely criticized for in recent years is a lack of online support for games. Many will be looking to Furukawa to help usher Nintendo into the modern age in that regard.
