Detroit: Become Human Developer Suing French Publications Over Bad Press

Quantic Dream, the developer behind next month’s hotly anticipated Detroit: Become Human, is suing two french media outlets over an exposé run earlier this year. According to the reports, Quantic Dream was harboring a destructive work environment where homophobia, sexism and overall malevolency was able to run rampant.

Guillaume de Fondaumière, co-CEO of Quantic, has vehemently denied these allegations, telling Kotaku in January that he planned on taking “all possible legal actions to defend my honor.”

“[Quantic Dream] categorically denies the allegations. As for myself, I’m furious and outraged by these accusations, which I take very seriously. And I will take all possible legal actions to defend my honor.”

Now, Fondaumière is making good on that promise and is suing Le Monde and Mediapart, two prominent French publications.

Though media law and freedom of the press are not ubiquitous, publications in France have many of the same protections that are found in America. In this instance, it will have to be proven that Le Monde and Mediapart were acting with malcontent in their reporting. Even if the story is found out to be false as Fondaumière asserts, as long as the two outlets did their due diligence, they should be free from persecution.

This is a critical time for Quantic Dream as Detroit: Become Human is due to hit shelves in just over a month. The game officially wrapped up production today and a demo is scheduled to drop later this week.

It’s been in production for four years now and this isn’t the first spat of bad publicity that Quantic has had to deal with. The game, which focuses on a society where humanoid service androids have gained sentience, has been criticized for the way in which in depicts domestic violence and child abuse.

Detroit: Become Human is a PlayStation exclusive and has a release date of May 25, 2018.
