Nintendo Hardware Dominates October Sales

According to Nintendo and the NPD Group, Nintendo held the top two spots in October’s US hardware sales charts. For the second month in a row, the Switch was the best selling console in the US. More surprising was the number two spot, which didn’t go to the PS4 or Xbox One, but rather the SNES Classic.

With Super Mario Odyssey debuting at the end of October and the Switch still being the newest major console on the market, its spot at the top should come as a surprise to no one. In fact, most industry analysts expect the Switch to remain at the top throughout the holiday sales period.

The big surprise was the placing of the SNES Classic. The small retro-console has been difficult to get your hands on by most standards, but Nintendo has apparently managed to muster up enough units to beat down its two biggest rivals.

Nintendo’s winning streak doesn’t end there. According to a press release from the company, “When combined with the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, Nintendo systems accounted for two-thirds of all video game hardware sold in the United States for the second month in a row.” In a case of a rising tide lifting all boats, Nintendo went on to say “The U.S. video game industry achieved hardware sales of more than 1 million total units in October for the first time since 2011.”

The NPD Group also recently released its software sales numbers for the month of October. Middle-earth: Shadow of War earned itself the top spot, while Assassin’s Creed: Origins took home the silver. Still, arguably the biggest winner was Nintendo once again as Super Mario Odyssey finished in third place, despite coming out with only four days left in the month and being available on only one console.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole and NBA 2K18 were fourth and fifth on the list respectively.
