Paladins Adds Battle Royale Mode Called ‘Battlegrounds’

by | Jan 5, 2018 | News, News Section, Videogames

Paladins jumped right onto to the battle royale train with their new “Battlegrounds” mode. Not to be confused with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or Fortnite Battle Royale or H1Z1 or The Darwin Project or any of the other numerous battle royale games, Paladins Battlegrounds drops 100 players onto an expansive map and the last person or team standing is declared the winner.

A fog slowly envelopes the island and, presumably, forces the map to become smaller and smaller as time progresses. And we know what you’re thinking, this mode sounds awfully familiar. But don’t worry. According to the game’s official HRX 2018 Keynote Recap, “In joining the two genres together, [Paladins has] come up with something that feels brand new.”

Paladins is pitching their “Battleground” mode as the first-ever hero shooter battle royale. That’s why they think their idea is “brand new.” In reality, it just looks like Overwatch meets PUBG.

On the brightside, even though it’s an obvious attempt at a market grab, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a bad game mode. If you’re into battle royales, a hero shooter battle royale might sound like a pretty cool idea.

Paladins Battleground is unequivocally a shameless jump onto the battle royale band wagon, but it might be a good move for the game. Paladins is already not very popular and lives in the shadows of games like Overwatch. The worst case scenario is that the new game mode is a total bore and people continue to ignore the game. The best case scenario is that the new mode is a roaring success and propels Paladins into the big league. In a risk vs reward scenario, it’s a reasonable move for Hi-Rez Studios.
