Will Pokemon Go’s New Update Bring Back Fans?
Pokemon Go is still kicking, and its newest update continues to expand the Augmented Reality (AR) technology that it pioneered. This is consistent with the vision of Pokemon CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara. He commented back in September that he envisioned a fully interactive Pokemon AR where they responded to real world objects and stimuli, and Pokemon Go’s newest update gets a little closer to that reality.
Pokemon Go’s newest update is called AR+ and reportedly uses Apple’s ARKit to enhance the responsiveness of their AR technology, including better judging sizes and distances. One of the biggest changes this brings is Pokemon being much more representative of their size, at least comparatively. That is to say, that a Pokemon near a bench should look somewhat appropriately sized for it, whereas all Pokemon in the past were roughly the same. Pokemon will also be able to more solidly exist in a space, meaning if they are on a table, they should stay on that table. Moving closer to a Pokemon should make it appropriately larger as well.
This new mode does offer additional rewards as well. Sneaking up on a Pokemon to catch it will cause it to flee if it gets spooked. If it does not get scared, the player will receive an ‘expert handler’ bonus netting some additional XP and stardust. Unfortunately, for many fans hoping to capitalize on these bonuses or new modes, the AR+ is only available to iPhone users, and even then, only to iPhone 6s and above.
As with their past updates, this new update does little to stymie the hemorrhaging of players the game has had since launch. In its initial months, Pokemon Go had over 55 million users. An April report of this year put that number at just 5 million, and that hasn’t been updated in 8 months. An AR update is unlikely to fix those numbers, especially one which targets only iPhone users. In fact, it’s likely this update will only worsen one of the biggest problems users already have with the game.
One of the most cited complaints against Pokemon Go was the drain on battery life, something which Niantic never quite solved. To combat this, most players don’t even use the AR feature, instead opting for the cartoonish backgrounds that drain less battery. Though Niantic has done little to solve the many complaints users have had with the game, this is among the first updates that might actually make one of the complaints worse. After losing well over 90% of their users, Niantic may want to consider listening to their fans before their next update.
