The Monster Hunter: World Beta Will be Open to anyone on PS4

Only weeks ago, Capcom held a closed beta for Monster Hunter: World on the PS4. The beta was exclusive for gamers with a Playstation Plus account, but following their initial testing, Capcom is now giving everyone a chance. Beginning on December 22 and ending on December 26, the beta will let anyone who downloads the client give the game a try.

Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter has always been a unique franchise. Originally released on the Playstation 2, it has been some time since Playstation has seen love from the series. Monster Hunter 2 was released on Playstation, but only in Japan, and in 2009, Monster Hunter Tri was released for the Wii. Following this, the only sign of Monster Hunter were spinoffs, like the Monster Hunter: Frontier G game that was released across all platforms. Monster Hunter: World will be the first major, traditional Monster Hunter game to grace Playstation in sometime, and that is something everyone should be excited for.

Monster Hunter is also one of the few games that can boast a learning curve of similar difficulty to Dark Souls, and one that did it without ever intending to. The first really troublesome enemy for most Monster Hunter players was the Kut-Ku, a large dino-chicken that looks completely ridiculous and stupid, and which beats the holy hell out of all new players. Monster Hunter veterans all laugh at the Kut-Ku, but they all remember it. Like Dark Souls, Monster Hunter is about timing, about rolling (and invincibility frames), and about getting hits and getting out. It’s also about cats, crafting, luring, trapping, and cooking.

The reason so many fans of Monster Hunter are excited about Monster Hunter: World is that it brings all of their favorite things back in a huge AAA title. Unlike past releases, it isn’t a DS or PSP port, and it looks to bring back everything great about the original games, just bigger. Especially considering the current gaming climate with loot boxes, skins, and customization being king, the armor crafting system of Monster Hunter along with the Palicos – the cat companions – fit directly into that.

Few people would be hard-pressed to say they don’t want a tiny cat companion in a huge turban with an outrageous mustache, or a cat companion decked in full-plate dragon armor. It’s harder still to resist the lure of teaming up with a bunch of strangers online to wallop the holy hell out of a dragon. Monster Hunter: World has even promised to make the world an experience massively more inviting and exciting. Some enemies don’t just battle; they might run away, entering the territory of an even bigger worse predator and forcing players to figure out how to take down their prey as it gets involved in a Godzilla vs. King Kong type battle.

From all of the screens and videos, there are almost no negatives to spot in Monster Hunter: World, and we, like many, will be jumping at a chance to play in the PS4 beta this upcoming weekend.
