New One Piece Game, One Piece: World Seeker coming in 2018

The most popular anime in Japan is getting a new video game, teased on Bandai Namco’s twitter just yesterday. Very little is known about the game other than that it will be released on the PS4, X1, and PC. Unlike many of the more RPG focused One Piece games of old, One Piece: World Seeker also looks to be an action adventure game with a focus on exploration.

One Piece: World Seeker

This year marked the 20 year anniversary of One Piece, the most popular manga/anime series in Japan. The pirate-themed series has long been a staple in Japanese culture, holding a Guinness World Record for most copies published in a comic series by the same author. It has also broken numerous other records with the highest initial print run of any book in Japan and selling over 430 million copies worldwide, which makes it the best-selling manga series in history.

In the 20 years of its life span, which have seen it grow from a popular underdog to the undisputed king, the One Piece series has seen nearly 800 anime episodes, 13 movies, 11 TV specials, and over 40 video games – though most of those were released on systems like the WonderSwan and Game Boy. Despite the massive catalogue of content produced for One Piece, it has never struck video game gold. Its games clearly do well enough to warrant more – 40+ games means someone is making money – but it is hardly a recognized name in gaming. Probably the most successful One Piece game is One Piece Treasure Cruise, a mobile game that boasts over 70 million downloads.

Though Bandai has teased information, they haven’t landed on any solid details. They’ve released statements advertising “waging battles in an expansive seamless world,” but they never quite call the title open-world. However, nearly everything about the game screams it. From the teased screenshots, to the statements about the expansive world, to even the title World Seeker, the game seems poised to try and break into the gaming market by taking on the vastly popular open-world model. Even the website for One Piece: World Seeker flaunts the massive world of the game.

If that is their goal, fewer series are better poised for open-world than One Piece. The main character, Luffy, has the ability to stretch any part of his body like rubber, and he often uses it to launch, climb, and spring across all kinds of terrain and scenery. If utilized correctly in an open-world setting, it would be hard to beat the sheer scale of what the player could do.

It’s also unknown at this point what role the other characters on the show will play since the only screenshots feature Luffy. There is one glimmer of Zoro, the first-mate on the crew, sleeping as Luffy looks out at the map of World Seeker. This is a good sign that he will probably make an appearance, whether as an NPC or a playable character.

Whatever the final details are, we are hoping that One Piece: World Seeker can finally break the anime into the gaming world for good.
