Daredevil’s writer might be just what the Netflix Witcher Series Needed

It is good to be skeptical of video games turned into shows, mostly because they have all been terrible. However, as far as games go, the Witcher is an excellent choice, probably because it started as a book. With the books and games having somewhat episodic structuring, the Witcher is born to be serialized. Still, taking a fantasy setting with swords, monsters and magic and adapting it into a show can be difficult, not just because bad CG can ruin it, but because bad writing can. Netflix has hoped to fix this by signing the writer and producer from Daredevil, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.

Daredevil

Last week, Variety broke the story that Hissrich would be the showrunner for the Netflix Witcher series. This was initially worrying, not just because video game shows suck, but because of the sometimes uneven quality of Daredevil. While the show has received high praise and success, the characters have often been criticized for being flat and uninteresting. Many fans hated Daredevil’s character in the second seasons – the same season that Hissrich served as the co-executive producer – and several of the character’s story arches petered out as the season went on.

However, as a showrunner, Hissrich’s job will be a little different than her role as a producer. And as a writer, Hissrich is much more exciting. Of the 13 Daredevil episodes, Hissrich wrote three, Kinbaku, Seven Minutes in Heaven, and The Dark at the End of the Tunnel. While many episodes of Daredevil are uneven, Kinbaku and Seven Minutes in Heaven are among the best. Kinbaku features Daredevil’s romance with Page while Seven Minutes in Heaven puts the Punisher against Kingpin. Both episodes shine light on important elements that could be useful for the Witcher.

A large part of Geralt’s character is his fantastic ability to woo and romance women. In fact, in all three Witcher games, the romances of Geralt play a central theme, with each game becoming more intricate in its depictions. The fact that Hissrich wrote a pivotal episode in Daredevil’s love life gives hope that she can do the same for Geralt. Similarly, Geralt often deals with cunning and interesting antagonists. The cat and mouse conversations of a villain and hero are a common trope of fantasy adventures, and from Geralt’s detective skills in the Witcher 1 to his interrogation in Witcher 2, his interactions with his enemies are a key part of his character. The Punisher’s interactions with the Kingpin were tense and exciting, and the kind of thing the Witcher would need.

The shows premier is still years away, but for fans disappointed that CD Projekt Red would no longer be making Witcher games, it gives new life to the franchise.
