Adventure Time Gets an Open-World Pirate Game, but it won’t be good

Adventure Time is one of those cartoons that no one can quite classify. Kids love it, adults love it, and its content walks the line between inappropriate and kid friendly. Is it okay to show kids living eggs being cracked open and combined with a living cheese, to create the ultimate sentient sandwich? It probably is okay, but it’s also very weird. Next year, that weirdness will see its first game with Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion, coming to all major systems.

Adventure Time Game

The good news is that Adventure Time is getting a game, and for the adult gaming fans out there, that seems great. The bad news is that it seems pretty unlikely this will be what most of us would call a good game. The developers behind the title, Outright Games, are a company that exactly zero gamers have probably ever heard of. The only other game that Outright has under its belt is a Ben 10 game for the PS4 that was most definitely a children’s game and most definitely bad. While the Adventure Time game’s rating is pending, it’s pretty likely it is going to be E.

Unlike movies, an E rating on a game almost universally hurls it into the pile of children’s games that are both poorly made and unenjoyably. This is fairly disappointing considering the source material available, especially since the writing is often more adult themed in its complexity and weirdness. While the bright colors and wackiness appeal to kids, it was the amusing premise and dialogue that first pulled adults in to the series.

We won’t know for certain what type of game Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion will be until it is released, but the fact that the homepage for Outright Games immediately states, “We are a family business making family entertainment,” doesn’t inspire us with confidence that the same people who enjoy AAA titles are going to find much of value here.
