Vote in The Steam Awards for Cards and Unlockables Dec. 21 – Jan. 3
Started last year, the Steam Awards are the only unbiased, completely community based video game awards on the planet. While the eponymously named Game Awards aren’t bad, and were certainly quite good this year, we aren’t entirely convinced Blizzard didn’t back a truck load of money into their garage to win best esport when it hasn’t even started its first season. That’s why we will always favor the Steam Awards, and not just because they have the best category names of all time.
The Steam Awards have one of the most innovative systems for game selection out there, which is that it is entirely up to the community. Before the actual games were chosen, Steam had several days of voting. The rules were pretty simple – choose any game you want. Games weren’t restricted by year, which is how Dishonored 2 and other games made it onto the list, or anything else. What Steam did do was offer encouragements for voting properly. For instance, if you owned a game you voted for, that was worth an achievement. If you had played the game, that was worth another achievement as. They were small incentives, but it went a long way towards Steam trusting its own community.
Unlike the kinds of awards you would expect from the Grammies or the Oscars, Steam Awards are a bit different – and by different we mean better. Sure, they have traditional categories like “Best Soundtrack”, but they also have the “Whoooaaaaaa, Dude! 2.0” award, which is as genius as it is gibberish. We would love to tell you what that award is for, but Steam is vague enough that it wouldn’t matter. Let’s also not forget the “Mom’s Spaghetti” Award, with the best description of all time:
“There are games so intense that they elicit a physical reaction. We’re talking weak knees. We’re talking sweaty palms. We’re talking fear-induced accidents. We’re talking your friends reminding you to breathe. We’re talking about mom’s spaghetti.”
Voting in the awards also rewards a card every day. If you aren’t sure of what Steam trading cards are, that’s a rabbit hole for another time. Suffice to say, we will be voting in the Steam Awards. We will also be collecting seasonal cards and probably spending way too much money on Steam Sale games. Why? Because it’s the season of giving, and it’s time to give back to your favorite “Mom’s Spaghetti” game while getting some cool cards in the process.
