Sony released its second quarter earnings report today and the electronics company has its PlayStation division to thank for a steep rise in profits and an increase in year-end estimates.

The PlayStation console is the core of Sony’s gaming division that also includes PSVR and various other gaming related subsidies. In the last quarter, this division saw an increase of 35.4 percent year-on-year in operating revenue, according to the company’s consolidated financial report. That increase helped fuel an overall sales and operating revenue increase of 22.1 percent for Sony. 

According to Sony, the favorable figures are a result of an increase in PS4 software sales including “sales through the network, the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as an increase in PS4 hardware sales.”

Investors and fans of Sony should be encouraged by the overall financial numbers. They come on the heels of what was an incredibly competitive quarter for the gaming market. The Nintendo Switch is still fresh and is experiencing booming sales, all the while Microsoft is pushing its new powerhouse Xbox One X console, which is scheduled to for release next week.

With all three of the big console makers going strong into the holiday season, the next round of quarterly reports will be something to keep an eye on. They’ll mark the first Holiday sales period for both the Switch and Xbox One X, as well as PSVR at its newly lowered price.
