Fortnite on Switch Has Started a Whole New Problem with PS4
Fortnite’s move to the Switch was a very good one. A huge portion of the Fortnite community is younger children, made all the more evident by the dance contests – things like Orange Justice – as well by the fact that every kid on the planet seems to be doing Fortnite dances. As the premier family console, Switch has the biggest claim on this demographic, which makes it a great move for Epic Games.
However, the initial launch saw two major issues. The first was that matchmaking broke almost immediately. But after being reported, Epic jumped in and quickly fixed it. The second issue is one that Epic, nor Nintendo, could so easily fix.
Any accounts that have been used on the PS4 cannot be used on the Switch, and vice versa. Instead, one of two messages pop up. If you try to play a PS4 account on a Switch, this message pops up:
“This Fortnite account is associated with a platform which does not allow it to operate on the Switch.”
If users instead try to play a Switch account on a PS4, they get this:
“The Epic Account you tried to link can not play on this platform.”
The answer to this isn’t exactly a hard one to figure out. Sony has stated in the past that they simply don’t have any interest in cross-play support with any platforms. As far as Sony is concerned, the console wars aren’t over, and they never will be. PCs are the only exception to the cross-play ruling out of Sony, so Fortnite is no exception. This seems to have extend into accounts well.
Nintendo isn’t exactly sitting on the fence though. It’s obvious just from the messages that appear on each console that Nintendo is choosing to be a bit cheeky and make sure everyone knows the ‘platform’ at fault is PlayStation. In a statement with Polygon, Reggie Fils-Aime, the president and COO of Nintendo America, directly called out Sony.
“You have companies like mine that encourage cross-play and enable cross-play. You have a developer and content owner that wants cross-play and is encouraging cross-play, and then you have the other platform holders and what it is that they do.”
So Nintendo is pointing all fingers at Sony. Meanwhile, Sony is refusing to comment. They instead have talked about who they are willing to work with (PC) and stated they care about their community. They stubbornly refuse to say anything about the actual incident.
The issue is further made difficult by a very important fact. Fortnite is free. Buying a game for PS4 is arguably a purchase just for PS4, especially since many publishers can and do make deals with consoles, like to be exclusive on them or release at an earlier date. Fortnite hasn’t done any of that though.
Playing the game is as simple as making an account and logging in. So if a PS4 account doesn’t work on Switch, a user could just make a new one. The only thing Sony is doing is stopping outfits, dances, and the like from being able to be played on both consoles. That seems a little petty, but it also serves the purpose. If you choose PS4, Sony wants you to stay PS4.
With the PS4 continuing to dominate the console market and winning exclusive, critically-acclaimed titles like God of War, they can sort of do whatever they want. The only question is if fans will get tired of the company at the top not playing nice with the others.
