The Incredible Beauty of the ARPG Moonlighter

Moonlighter is what you get when you put action RPG, rogue-lite, and shopkeeping elements all into one game – and it’s out now.

If there is one thing that is immediately obvious about Moonlighter, it is that it is stunningly gorgeous. Pixel graphics have been making a huge comeback  – particularly in indie titles – but none have so fluidly captured art in the way that Moonlighter has. Movements are ridiculously clean, actions crisp and clear, and all the while under the appearance of a game from long ago. But Moonlighter is more than just a pretty face.

Gamers will play as Will, a shopkeeper by day and cave-exploring adventurer by night. The crux of the gameplay will focus on Will’s adventures through gates to other worlds and in his running of his shop (which will usually be populated by the materials he finds in his adventures). The game comes complete with a plethora of systems to make both experiences engaging.

As the owner of his own shop, Will has a duty to see his business prosper (after all, he inherited it from his parents). To that end, Moonlighter is similar to games like Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale. Both titles share a process of dungeon delving in order to create a successful shop, but the systems for shopkeeping and delving are far more intricate in Moonlighter.

The shopkeeping in Moonlighter has staples such as setting item prices against demand, managing profits and costs, and upgrading the shop. Players will also be able to recruit assistants as demand and interest in the shop grows all while watching out for possible thieves. The shop will also be a centerpiece of Rynoka village, and as the shop grows, interactions with a variety of villagers will grow and evolve as well. Will can also craft and upgrade his equipment with materials he finds while exploring.

While the story for Moonlighter is rather simple, it is cleverly told. As can be seen in the trailer, the game favors storytelling through actions, not words. Fortunately, Will is pretty easy to understand, which doesn’t mean the rest of the village doesn’t speak. NPCs can be spoken to, and crafters and enchanters will certainly have things to say. Like Darksouls though, Moonlighter likes to talk about the world indirectly, namely through notes and item descriptions. In this way, it keeps the focus squarely on the visuals and design of the game.

Considering that Moonlighter got its start on Kickstarter, it has come a long way. The game even managed to generate more than 3x its original goal. Like most Kickstarter projects, Moonlighter didn’t quite hit its initial release date, but the quality hasn’t suffered for it. As the first game from Digital Sun Games, Moonlighter is an amazing entry into the industry.

Moonlighter was released on May 29 and is available now on PC, Xbox, and PS4.
