Telltale’s Walking Dead: The Final Season Releases in August

The series that started it all is coming to its final conclusion. The Walking Dead: The Final Season will release on August 14, 2018, and conclude the game in four episodes. This puts the series at just over six years old and a long time in the making. While it will be the end of the long-running series, Telltale is planning on putting it to rest properly.

The Walking Dead put Telltale on the map and created a style of game completely unique to the company. The decision based gameplay, simple point-and-click, and visual-novel qualities of Telltale’s early games were all created in this series, and the game won universal acclaim for its originality and gripping narrative. But Telltale has plans for the evolution of the series.

The game will feature more exploration and control than ever before with an over-the-shoulder camera system. The game will still be fairly linear, but comic-panel interactivity of the first season is replaced by a far greater ability to interact with and discover Clementine’s environment. This will include unscripted combat into events as well, something the series has never yet attempted.

Telltale is also doing everything they can to give fans the full scope of the series. Anyone who pre-orders The Walking Dead: The Final Season on PS4 or Xbox will receive access to the entire series of games, including all 19 episodes from past seasons. For anyone that has managed to hold out for the six years between the games original launch and now, it is a pretty good deal to follow the series from inception to end.

The announcement also follows quickly on the heels of Telltale’s recent news on Wolf Among Us Season 2. With piles of games releasing between The Walking Dead and Wolf Among us, it feels a lot like Telltale is returning to its roots. Both games area also being fully revamped. The new engine for The Walking Dead: The Final Season is a good indication of what fans can expect from future Telltale games. It is fits with what the company has said about Wolf Among Us Season 2. The company said they wanted to bring more action and interactivity than ever before, and it certainly sounds like the new system would do just that.

As for the story, Clementine will find what could be a final home in an abandoned and secluded school. She is still accompanied by AJ from Season 2, the only lasting remnant of her ragtag team. The game will likely feature some pretty finale decisions affecting who lives and who dies, and knowing there won’t be any further episodes should let fans know that anyone is on the chopping block.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season will be released on August 14, 2018 on PC, PS4, and Xbox. It will also be available for pre-order on June 8 for $19.99.
