After first being teased over a year ago, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is finally here. It’s a mobile game based in the Harry Potter universe and created by the same people who brought us Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff and Marvel’s Avengers Academy.

The crux of the game is its story, which takes place seven years before Harry himself begins at Hogwarts. You start off by creating your character, customizing just about every aspect you could hope for. Then, after venturing to Diagon Alley and getting your school supplies, it’s off to Hogwarts where you’ll be sorted and things can real get underway.

Hogwarts Mystery encompasses a seven year story arc that, presumably, takes you from start to finish as a Hogwarts student. The core story is said to revolve around a mystery involving your character’s brother and why he was expelled from school, but it seems like the game is more about the journey than the destination.

Though Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco and all the other characters from that class won’t make appearances in the game due to the timing of it all, there are still plenty of familiar faces to be found. From Flitwick to Hagrid, Snape to Fang, George Weasley to Professor McGonagall and plenty more in between, there looks to be no shortage of the characters whom we’ve come to know and love.

As far as the gameplay is concerned, things won’t be very difficult. Hogwarts Mystery is a simple mobile RPG with an incredibly rich story. The control aspect of the game is rather straightforward, mostly just swipes and taps. Players looking for a challenging experience might be disappointed, but again, the game is about the story more than anything else.

According to the developers, the script for the game stands at more than 200,000 words, far more than any single Harry Potter book. As with any good RPG, decisions you make along the way have an impact on both your character and the story, but it isn’t yet clear how they might effect the end of the game.

Hogwarts Mystery will allow you to duel other witches and wizards, play quidditch matches, master spells and explore the magical world before Voldemort’s return. For Potterheads looking to dive deeper into their favorite magical world, what more could you ask for?
