Rocket League Patch: Tournaments, Chat Bans, and Some Jams

A new update has come to Rocket League bringing with it some major and minor changes. The game is growing in popularity in the esport’s community and patch v1.43 aims to enhance the esports experience of Rocket League.

The marquee addition of this patch is the new tournament mode. Players now have the ability to start their own tournaments or join another player’s tournament. In tournament mode, a player is allowed to moderate their tournament and set the criteria of who can compete based on a player’s rank. Both Dota 2 and League of Legends added tournament modes of their own, which have been met with varied degrees success. A full description of the tournament mode in Rocket League can be found in this video.

Another major addition included in the update is the ability to give certain player’s “Chat Bans.” Once a player is given a Chat Ban they will be incapable of sending messages online. A banned player can still use Quick Chat, but the number of messages they send will be limited to one message every five seconds.

The new Chat Ban system is an attempt to combat player toxicity in the Rocket League community. Whether or not this system will actually work is up for debate. It’s not realistic to expect these changes or any to remove poison permanently from the gaming community. Just last year League of Legends gave up on using bans and took a different approach to toxicity with Camp Yordle.

The update also brings some minor changes to the game including new inventory items and improvements to the camera (video capture was added to the Switch version). New flags and more team colors were added as well and some bugs were fixed. A full list of additions can be found on the official Rocket League website.

One of the most overdue changes is the inclusion of in-game music. Having background music in a game is pretty standard in games and the fact that it took the developers this long to add music during gameplay is a bit surprising. The soundtrack is quite extensive, and any of the songs can be listened to on Spotify.
