Support from Community Pours in after Doublelift’s Tragedy

by | Apr 2, 2018 | Esports, Esports section, News, Videogames

Late Saturday night, the League of Legends community was rocked by devastating news from Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng. Over the course of the weekend, Doublelift revealed that a terrible tragedy befell his family Saturday night. In an apparent act of grief, his brother attacked their parents, mortally wounding his mother and sending his father to the hospital. The viciousness of the attack has sent a shockwave through everyone from fans to players, especially considering what a vocal and leading figure Doublelift is within League of Legends. However, while the news is devastating, the support that has flooded Doubelift has been nothing short of amazing.

Doublelift Mother Stabbed

Just minutes and hours after Doublelift posted the above tweet, thousands of fans took to Twitter and Reddit to show solidarity, compassion, and connection with the grieving player. But among those fans were many, many members of the League of Legends and esports world, some who work directly with Doubelift, some who play against him, and some from previous teams. All of them have been united, however, in their desire to come swiftly to the aid of a member of the community.

The support for Doubelift has come so quickly that many of the messages have been buried by the thousands more coming in. But sifting through the messages shows that the pain and compassion has spread far and wide. Condolences have come from his own organization, from other teams, from dozens of members of Riot, from several of the top streamers, and even from professional players from other countries and other esports.

For those that have followed Doublelift’s story since the beginning, this story is especially tragic. Like many professional esports players, the path from player to pro was not easy. Doublelift’s traditional Chinese family was vehemently against his entering into the esports scene, to the point where he was kicked out of his home at the age of 16 and even went two years without speaking to his family. It was only through his older brother’s support that Doublelift credits being able to make it through their rough childhood, and it was only because his older brother helped him to convince his parents that he was able to attend his first tournament in Sweden. Five years ago, he had this to say about his brother:

“I miss my brothers sometimes… I think my older brother is the most influential figure in my life… blood is blood. You have to take care of your family.”

It is a testament to Doublelift’s journey that he has made so many friends and fans that would be so supportive of him, whether through donations to him when he was homeless, or by letting him room for free, as Travis Gafford did when Doublelift needed support. It is a testament to his spirit and strength that Doublelift has found so many that would stand beside him, and it is a testament to the love of the gaming community, that so many would grieve with him.
