Fast Travel, a Weekly Gaming Recap – February 2nd Edition
The Fast Travel weekly gaming recap is your resource for staying caught up on everything going on in the gaming industry. We start by highlighting a few of the week’s biggest news pieces. Then it’s on to a dollop of indie news. Followed by a helping of “The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week.” And finally, we gather up all the week’s headlines and smash them into a TL;DR pie for you to enjoy.
This Weeks Headlines
Twitch has been having a rough time with bots. Late last year, they pursued legal action against trolls using bot programs to flame and harass streamers. Earlier that same year, Twitch won a lawsuit against the business Twitchstarter, which sold services to streamers which would fill their channels viewerships with bots, falsely inflating their numbers. Adding to a string of victories, Twitch has recently won another court case against a married couple out of the UK who had found a way to circumvent many of Twitch’s protections against bots.
In 2017, mobile gaming accounted for $59.2 billion in revenue. The gaming industry as a whole raked in a whopping $108.4 billion, with PC gaming accumulating $33 billion and consoles $8.3 billion. That means that well over half of all gaming revenue from last year was a result of mobile games.
To put things into perspective, the total North American box office revenue for the last ten years is just over $100 billion.
The free games for February are here and neither PS Plus subscribers nor Xbox fans get any real standout titles. Instead, each platform has a couple of fun games that should tide you over for the short month.
Sony’s one-two punch of Knack and RiME should satiate those who like puzzles and general joviality. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s offering of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles – India and the 360 classic Split/Second are at least better options than what they saddled us with last month.
There are good sales numbers for games, there are great sales numbers for games, and then there is what Monster Hunter World did its opening weekend. In just three days following the release of Monster Hunter World on January 26, the game has already sold 5 million units across the PS4, and Xbox One, making it far and away the most successful game of the series.

The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week
The best thing on the internet this week was a video that resurfaced from late last year. In it, a man tries out VR for the first time, but it’s no normal VR, it’s a virtual reality simulator. I could explain more, but instead, just check out the video above of a man named Rodger almost shitting himself on TV (warning: Rodger screams a lot).
