Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee! Are a Refreshing Return to Kanto

There’s been a lot of excitement and confusion regarding the next games in the Pokémon franchise, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!. Now, thanks to the Nintendo Treehouse Stream at E3, we have a better idea of what we can expect.

The two Let’s Go titles can best be described as Pokémon Yellow remakes with Pokémon Go compatibility and mechanics. Depending on the game you choose, either Pikachu or Eevee will be the starter Pokémon that travels on your hat or shoulder while you traverse the landscape of Kanto.

Let’s Go also borrows mechanics from previous games in the series. As in Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, the first Pokémon in your party (or second if Eevee/Pikachu are first) will follow your trainer around. Also returning from Sun and Moon is the Ride Pokémon mechanic. In previous games, HMs (hidden machines) took up valuable move slots for your party. With Ride Pokémon, you will be given multiple non-battle Pokémon that can be called upon to travel past obstacles.

Pokémon Go mechanics will also be integrated into the games. The most obvious of which is Go’s catching mechanic, which will be replacing wild Pokémon battles. Players will run up to Pokémon roaming in the wild, then use the motion controls of the Joy-Con to catch Pokémon. For an even more immersive experience, players can also buy the new Pokéball Plus accessory that can be used as your controller for the full game. Players who buy the accessory will be given a free Mew to start the game as well.

Let’s Go isn’t just about hitting on nostalgia, though. For the first time in a Pokémon RPG, in-game multiplayer will be available at any time. Throughout the game, the addition of a second player turns all trainer battles into double battles. Also unique to Let’s Go is the new leveling system. Trainers will be given different candies to power up their Pokémon, although how extensive this process is has yet to be revealed.

Some veteran players have voiced their concern over the games’ potential difficulty, or lack thereof. Nintendo and Niantic managed to reach a new and extended player base with the casual nature of Pokémon Go, but they’ll need to walk a fine line when it comes to Let’s Go. Too easy and they risk alienating their loyal fanbase, too difficult and Pokémon Go players might feel overwhelmed.

Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee! will release worldwide November 16th.
