Ninja Win’s E3 Fortnite Tournament, Loses 40,000 Followers

Things were a bit up and down for Ninja this week. On the one hand, he and Marshmallow dominated Epic’s E3 Fortnite tournament to take home $1 million for their charities. On the other hand, he lost over 40,000 Twitch subscribers in less than 48 hours.

Of course, 40,000 subs isn’t too bad for a streamer who has over 8 million followers, but it’s still a dent and a reminder that subscribers are an incredibly demanding bunch.

According to Ninja, he lost subscribers because of the time he took off for E3 and the Fortnite tournament. So even though he wasn’t active on his Twitch channel, he was still active in the Fortnite and general gaming communities when the subscribers decided to leave. To his credit, he brushed off the loss coolly saying, “The 1 million for charity is everything.”

Ninja also offered an explanation for his original Tweet, saying that it was “more of a fun fact tweet to potential new streamers” and an example of how streaming is “the ultimate grind.”

Epic’s E3 Fortnite tournament was a highlight of the opening day festivities. Although Ninja and Marshmallow took home the top prize, it was CouRage and Kenneth Faried who scored the most eliminations and took home the 2nd place prize ($500,000 for their charities). Third place and $250,000 went to the duo of KittyPlays and Chandler Riggs.

The Pro-Am event was a terrific display of what Fortnite esports could look like, so it makes sense that Epic chose the moments leading up to it to announce the 2019 Fortnite World Cup. The prize pool for the World Cup has been set at $100 million and Epic promised more information would be revealed soon.
