Devil May Cry 5 Brings Nero and Dante Center Stage

Capcom has finally released news and a trailer for Devil May Cry 5. The series has turned away from the reboot and returned to firmer footing. Most prominent and center-stage is Nero sporting a slightly different look than fans are used to. The trailer also shows that Dante will be returning as well, but perhaps in a different role.

It’s been five years since the Devil May Cry reboot was released, so expectations are pretty high for fans. Though the reboot did moderately well, and was mostly liked, it clearly wasn’t the direction the series wanted to go in. So far, Devil May Cry 5 looks like the successor to Devil May Cry 4 in almost every way.

The game once again opens with Nero (who now looks a lot more like rebooted Dante). Instead of his demonic arm, he sports a new fancy mechanical one. His personality also seems quite a bit less somber and quite a bit more… Dante. But the closing sequence of the trailer, featuring Dante on a motorcycle, indicates that the game might once again allow players to alternate between the two characters as they did in the past. Or, the game could go the route of Metal Gear Solid 2 and put Dante in a veteran NPC status while letting Nero lead the charge. Dante’s older appearance – the only time he has ever appeared to age in the game’s 17 year history – may lead credence to this thought. Either way, they might be looking to have Nero become the successor to the franchise.

If there were any fears that the game wouldn’t have its usual over-the-top action and dialogue, this is pretty well smashed immediately. As Nero flips out of and over a van – shooting enemies as he goes – his mechanic side kick casually catches a cigarette in her mouth as the chaos goes on around them. There is even a scene that could be a throwback to Devil May Cry 3 as Nero briefly rides what appears to be a rocket. Nero’s gadgets also feature a grappling hook in his arm as well as a variety of guns and special attacks to make combat as ridiculous and explosive as possible. The only real question is if the ridiculous nature of the series will still hold up.

E3 already showcased another game with a one-armed man with a grappling hook who battles with a sword –  FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. While the two games are pretty different, hack and slash fans recognize the similarities. Devil May Cry was perhaps the game to define the genre in the new era of consoles. It set in motion a number of other games with air combos, manic fighting, and delightful mechanics to kill enemies in impressive ways. FromSoftware changed all of that with Dark Souls. Combat became less manic and more controlled. Action was less button mashing and more strategy. Both games release next year and are sides of the same coin. It’s all about action, the only question is if there is room for both genres, or if fans have left behind the madcap antics of Dante and missile surfing.
