Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Bringing Everybody Back
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Bringing Everybody Back
Smash fans have a lot to be excited about today. Nintendo spent over 25 minutes of their E3 presentation focusing on what to look forward to with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s dive right in.
The first big reveal was that every character that’s been in a previous Smash game would be in Ultimate. Fan favorites such as the Ice Climbers, Pichu, and Solid Snake will be returning after long absences. All the DLC characters from Smash Wii U will be a part of the main roster as well, including Ryu, Cloud and Bayonetta.
Also, some characters will now be treated as Echo characters, or characters with the same movesets as others. For example, Dark Pit will just be an Echo of Pit. Many characters have been given quality of life changes as well. Some will have aspects of their moves show up above their character icon and others have simply been given better animations.
Competitive players also have several things to look forward too. Air dodging, short jumps, and perfect shields are all set to make their return and as if that weren’t enough, GameCube controllers will be fully compatible with Ultimate as well.
Another major change for the competitive scene is the fact that stage selection will now come before character selection. And if matches are played consecutively, the losing player gets control of the next stage choice. In keeping with the faster gameplay philosophy, 2-player matches will also have higher damage outputs than multiplayer matches.
And we can’t forget about the new character announcements. Inklings from the Splatoon games were revealed in the Smash teaser during the last Nintendo Direct, but they’re not the only newcomers. Game director Masahiro Sakurai finished the Smash reveal on a particularly high note with an animated cutscene that revealed Ridley from the Metroid series as a playable character. Ridley was last seen as a boss character in Brawl and has undoubtedly been one of the most clamored for characters in Smash history.
E3 was just the tip of the iceberg. With updated graphics, new character animations and the largest roster ever, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have fans speculating on every detail right up until December 7th, the game’s official release date.
